Appeal
to the Illinois State Property Tax Appeal Board.
There are
two grounds for an appeal of your assessment.
Value.
You believe
the assessment is incorrect based on market value. Could you sell
your property for the market value of the assessment?
Equity.
Is the assessment
equitable? Are similar properties assessed similarly?
Supporting
either argument will require you to have some supporting documentation,
such as sales prices or assessments of similar properties. Our
office will be glad to assist you in obtaining this information.
KEEP IN MIND
THAT THIS APPEAL MUST BE RELATED TO THE VALUE OF YOUR PROPERTY.
THE AMOUNT OF YOUR TAX BILL IS OUTSIDE OF OUR CONTROL.
While you
may discuss your assessment anytime with the assessor, there are
time restrictions for formal appeals. To appeal to the McHenry
County Board of Review you must do so within a thirty (30) day
period after the publication of your township assessment in the
newspaper. The Supervisor of Assessments authorizes this after
that office receives the books from the township assessor. To
appeal to the state, you must do so within thirty (30) days of
the McHenry County Board of Review decision.
